Robert Angus Gunn was born in Portvasgo Melness in 1911, son
of John Gunn of Melness and Jessie Ross. They married in 1906 in Fraserburgh. Robert was married to
Effie Janet Mackenzie, the sister of John A and John C Mackenzie who were both
killed in the First World War and whose stories appear elsewhere on this website.
Robert was employed as a shepherd and also by
the road contractor Sindlay, who had been working on the Tongue to Lairg road
prior to the outbreak of war. He had enlisted into the Royal Engineers during
the war and served in the stores section of his unit.
On the 30 of March 1946, he was
travelling in a lorry to a de-mob centre and his discharge from the forces,
when the lorry was involved in a traffic accident and rolled over. Lance
Corporal Gunn was one of those on the lorry to be killed; he was thirty-four
years of age.
